Mahi Meha

Too busy!!

Miscellaneous 1 Comment »

Today, I have so much to do that 24 hours look insufficient!! :( I took a break and blogged!

I had a holiday on Saturday and Sunday. But wanted to come to office on both the days. But I couldn’t come because Mahi wasn’t well. She is very fond of me and doesn’t go to anyone else when I am around. The heavy doses of medicine made her cranky and so I had to stay at home to look after her.

Now there is so much work to do and there’s so little time! :(

BTW, India won even the last one-day cricket match against Pakistan :D but the Indian juniors lost the u-19 world cup final to Pakistani juniors because of a spineless performance. :x

India Won!!

India won the one-day cricket series against Pakistan once again! So its a pay back time. Pakistan defeated India in India. Now India defeated Pakistan in Pakistan. :D I want them to win even the last one to make it a good sweep! Hope Indian team keeps up the good work.

Digital Photography - Some pics that I clicked

Hobbies 10 Comments »

From the Digit issue of February 2006, I came to know that sale of digital camera surpassed the sale of film cameras around January 2004. I felt relieved. ;) I was not too far behind. In November 2004, I took my first DigiCam. Its a 5.1 Mega Pixel DigiCam, Nikon Coolpix 5200 with a SanDisk 512 MB Card. It still feels like new and works great. Touch wood! :)

Photography has been a hobby since long but the cost of films and developing & printing was stopping me from pursuing it. Still, during all leisure or work tours I am in very few photographs because most of the times I am on the other side of the camera taking pics. :)

I love to take pictures of nature and natural beauty. Here are some of the pics that I have taken and would like to share with everyone.

How can ITEF oppose outsourcing?

Taxation & Legal No Comments »

ITEF, the Income Tax Employees Federation is opposing outsourcing of work (mainly refunds) even though it is well known fact that Income Tax refunds takes ages to come  and higher authorities are continuously complaining about vacancies!

ITEF claims that its members were not given an “opportunity” to do their work :x and some of them don’t even have a place to sit. I want to ask them 2 questions.

  1. How many of them come on time to work?
  2. There are at least some of them who have a place to sit and work. How much time do they spend working on their desk and for how long are they missing from their place/work/duty?

Whatever be the reason given by them. The main reason is that outsourcing results in loss of “revenue” for its members! :x The IT staff always takes months and continous follow up to issue refund cheques. Additionally, they take bribe before they issue any cheques of refunds and still behave as if they have done a big favour! Even after taking bribes, they hardly ever bother to calculate interest which is a legitimate claim of an assessee.

More than anything else, this loss of opportunity in earning extra revenue is their main grouse. :x

My experience with Muslims

Life's like that! 7 Comments »

The recent well justified uproar all around the world by Muslims because of a cartoon/caricture of the Prophet Mohammed made me think about the muslims I know, see and interact with in my life. My experience with them has been pretty pleasant. Here’re some I can remember at present. :)

  • Members of Bohri Community frequent the area where I live in Mumbai. Their religious head Sydna Mohd Burannuddin has his abode about 200-300 metres away from my house. These days hordes and hordes of his followers come there every day mainly because of Mohurrum. But there has been no commotion so far on any of the days. Their volunteers stand on the corner of every lane and guide all those who come to visit the priest. No confusion, no chaos, no nuisance.

A few years ago, it was the birthday of their priest (or may be it was some other important day). There were thousands and thousands of Bohri muslims standing in queue all the way from his house to my house and further. The queue was more than a kilometer long. But still, as always, there was no chaos. Everyone of them was patiently waiting and moving. Pretty disciplined crowd!

  • Then, I must mention about my first boss, guide and guru - Advocate Nusrat Shah. He is a gem of a person. Ask any of his sub-ordinates and all will agree that he is a very good boss and a very good human being. He is a kind hearted gentleman. I have seen him whole heartedly fighting cases for poor and paupers without charging a penny and also donating lakhs to Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for Kargil war victims!

He comes at least once every year to our home to have our gujarati undhiyu, puran poli and kadhi. :D He is a foodie and loves these dishes!

  • Ammar Electricwala and Mohammed Kapadia are the next two persons who come to my mind. Ammar is the one who introduced me to programming under Windows which is event based. At that time I was used to sequential programming under DOS. He is my Visual Basic guru and helped me think in terms of events instead of sequence of code. :)

Mohammed taught me Visual C++ and has been a friend since then. I have somewhat lost touch with both of them. I must admit that I am somewhat selfish and call them whenever I need their help. But they have always been helpful and solved my problems.

  • Then there is Shahab Jafri. He is a recent acquiantace through the Digit Forums where he is more popularly know as Batty. :) He has been always helpful. He is a techie to the core and has always answered my questions even if they were basic FAQ kind of questions. And this was even before we came to know each other pesonally or met each other. Actually, he keeps doing this to all. He is one of those patient guys who goes through the HijackThis log of every one who posts it. :)
  • Lastly, let me mention about Fahim Shaikh. Fahim is a talented commercial artist and a very good photographer. Photographs that he clicks with a 2 mega pixel camera are far better than the one I click with 5 mega pixel camera. I always wondered what’s wrong with me. Then I realised and told to myself, “its talent, silly!” :)

I have been able to reap some benefit out of Fahim’s pool of talent because he, alongwith Parita and Sonal (another talented pro and my sister-in-law :)), have designed my personal logo, visiting cards, letterheads, etc. They didn’t charge me a penny and still spent so much time and effort after it. I take this opportunity to thank them. They all still keep helping me by making templates for my clients’ websites. However, now I ensure that I pay them. :)

Sony DVD Writer

Technology 5 Comments »

I finally got a new Sony DVD Writer. My friend Deep will be pretty happy on hearing this because he is a self-proclaimed “Sony Man”.

I always get fascinated every time I buy something from Lamington Road. They always have something unusual to offer. This time, I was given 2 rates for the same piece of DVD-Writer. One of them was box packed and the other one is called “OEM”. OEM was cheaper by about Rs. 400. I have been buying from the same dealer since a few years. So went for the OEM and saved 400. Afterall what will I do with the box? ;) BTW, for record, this one isn’t a grey market purchase. I have the bill, warranty and will pay by cheque. :D

I have to install it and do it as soon as I finish writing this. ;) I don’t wait for tech support guys because I am always too eager to install and use new pieces of hardware. They take little longer to come and I am pretty impatient. :)

Now I will take backup of all my data. I haven’t taken a complete backup of data since quite some time and now my hard disk is due for a low-level format and a clean re-install of OS. I am pretty eager to try out the new version of Mandriva as well. I recently got a DVD of Mandriva with my issue of LinuxForYou. :)

Amnesty scheme, Registrar of Firms

Taxation & Legal 36 Comments »

The Government should come out with an amnesty scheme for all defaults in registration of partnership firms with Registrar of Firms.

Why an amnesty?
Under the Indian Partnership Act, 1932 (as is applicable in Maharashtra and consequently in Mumbai) registration of a partnership firm with Registrar of Firms (ROF) is compulsory. There are very drastic effects of non-registration. For example, if a partnership firm is not registered, it cannot file a suit against any one!

Special computer to handle Bill’s wealth

Technology No Comments »

I today read in Mid-Day that the richest man in the world, Bill Gates is so rich that computers in the US tax offices, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) cannot handle the figures in his tax returns. A separate computer is kept to handle exclusively his financial figures and still he keeps receiving false notices (followed by apologies from IRS) due to erroneous calculations made by those machines. :)

VSNL, stop clandestine adverts!

Miscellaneous, Technology 6 Comments »

VSNL/Tata Indicom is going to dumps day by day. Earlier (a few years back), their whole database of users was sold and marketing calls started coming in. How do I know it was sold? Because the marketing caller had some info about me which was submitted only to VSNL while I took my first dial-up account.

Now they have started mailing their customers with clandestine adverts.

I am not against advertising in their mails. Everyone tries to optimise their revenues. But they are trying to take people for a ride by covering it up as an informational mail. Here’s an example. This is the mail that I received yesterday. Read the rest of this entry »
