Data on CD/DVD is not safe!

Technology Add comments

A freak accident later, now I am very much worried for my data.

I have (or may be had) a Samsung DVD-ROM. I put in a CD and started installing a software from it. In the middle of installation, I heard a shattering sound and installation stopped responding. I was wondering what happened and clicked on open tray button!

It was then that I realised that the sound was of breaking of the CD-ROM!! It got shatterred to pieces!! I removed as many pieces as I could. Later even opened the drive and removed more pieces. But some of the pieces are still stuck in there. I will have to give it to a service center.

However, the point here is - how safe is the data backed up on a CD/DVD? Fortunately, the CD-ROM that broke had come with a magazine and was only carrying installation files of some softwares. But if CD-ROMs or DVD-ROMs can break this way in drives how unsafe the data really is!! This has happened for the first time with me. Till now, I used to think that if I take proper care of my CDs/DVDs, they will last a life time. But how wrong I was! Even if I have 3 copies, all can break! This freak accident has changed my outlook towards digital backup of data. I now realise the importance of keeping multiple copies of important data and have started fearing putting in important single copy CDs in the drives!

Apperantly there is no solution than keeping data on GMAIL.

GMail?? How much data can you keep on Gmail 2GB? I think it will be enough for the 4 CD”s what if you have more then that…..
Use the Hard Disk, and to move data use USB, flash drive or pen drive

    Nice Blog

I can’t even imagine keeping my confidential accounting data on Gmail!! There is no guarantee of privacy. Additionally, all data that has been uploaded will have to downloaded for use. With the “Indian Broadband” speeds, when will I finish downloading?

2 GB is anyway not enough for me. I have lots of data and hundreds of CDs/DVDs. The moot point is the safety of data on CD/DVD. We all assume that it going to be with us forever till it gets scratched!! Isn’t it? But that is simply not true :(

Well , the same thing happened with me once . It ruined my Cd Writer . Well for data storage you can go for USB hard Disk . But still even they can malfunction or crash sometimes . i dont think any medium is 100% safety proof .

sorry guys for not responding, i had to change my keyboard. The earlier gave me so much trouble, every key used to repsond to itself and the adjacent one. I was tried of correcting the spellings.

BTW i thought of a small data of just few contacts, .doc, .xls, .rar etc. files.

    Hmm…
See even god’s creations (us humans) are not perfect!!! Then how can imperfect people (us) create perfect gadgets. That the CD broke is not because it is a Samsung and not a Sony. Just call it bad luck. There is only one way to keep damn important stuff safe. Keep multiple copies, like on a CD and a DVD and a Flash Drive and your HDD as well… So, start backing up… ;)
