Windows XP SP3 is released. Here are the SP3 release notes. I was waiting for that since quite some time because now I will format my laptop HD and install SP3 on top of SP2. I hope SP3 incorporates all the updates released after SP2 and it solves more problems then it creates.
Some of the steps to take before installing XP-SP3 are truly frightening!
Look at step 4 for example.
We recommend that you perform a full backup of the files that you have on your computer to an external location, such as an external hard disk, DVD, CD, USB flash drive, or network folder. You can use the Backup and Restore Wizard to back up documents, pictures, and other files. For more information, see “Backing up files and folders” in Help and Support Center.
Backup DATA?? What the hell is SP3 going to do to my poor files and data? Is there something in SP3 that can go so horriblly wrong that it will mess up not only the Windows XP installation and registry but even my DATA?
XP SP3 installation will require about 2 GB hard disk space. I remember what a simple IE7 installation had done to my system My system has still not completely recovered from that mess. This really is the reason why I want to format the HD.
I guess I will wait for reviews and more information from techies all around before I venture to install SP3. Or wait! Why should I download it anyway? What’s the use of subscribing to tech magazines? It will come on a DVD by the time I am through with some reviews on web.
